The sculpture stands upright, with most of its weight shifted onto the right leg, resting on a column, which also bears the inscribed name “CARTILIVS POPLICOLA”. The left hand, right arm and head are missing, which is common in ancient statues that have survived to the present due to their fragility. The torso twists slightly, which enhances the sense of realism in the pose. The figure is nude except for a draped cloth that hangs over the left arm and wraps around the lower body.
